Chocolate Drop Cookies

Chocolate Drop Cookies - Feature

I was looking for an easy to make drop cookie recipe I could whip up for a party I was hosting. The Chocolate Drop Cookies seemed perfect because I know everyone loves chocolate and frosting and chopped nuts. A perfect cookie combination! After tasting the finished cookies, I thought the they were good, but I was amazed how much everyone said they loved them!  Grandma Bess’ Chocolate Drop Cookies with Chocolate Cream Frosting were the hit of the party!

I normally rate drop cookies recipes 1-start, but I’m rating Chocolate Drop Cookies 2-stars because of the added steps for the frosting and chopped nuts.  The cookies were easy to make and quick to put together once I got the consistency of the cookie dough and frosting just right.

As normal, I got started by pulling all my ingredients together. Once again, I substituted butter for shortening.

Per the recipe, I started mixing together the brown sugar and butter.  Next I added and mixed together the rest of the ingredients.  I was surprised to see the dough looked just like a cake dough.  Very creamy and smooth.

I wasn’t sure how this creamy dough was going to bake.  It seemed like it would spread out, not holding the shape of the cookie.  I baked a test batch to see.  I was pleasantly surprised to see the cookies kept their shape and turned out perfect!

Since the test batch baked up nicely, I was ready to bake the rest of the cookies.  I tried to drop the same amount of dough for each cookie so they would be consistent in size.  About 1/2 teaspoon was the perfect amount as the cookies spread out into a perfectly round cookie.

The cookies were fun to watch bake!  They puffed up and formed nice round cookies.

I baked each batch for 15 minutes.  The cookies flattened out when I look them out of the oven.  They were pretty easy to take off the greased cookie sheet.

I let the cookies cool completely and started making the frosting.

The Chocolate Drop Cookies recipes say to frost the cookies when cooled, but it doesn’t provide a frosting recipe.  So, I went back to Cookies by Bess to see what I could find.  Cookies by Bess has a bunch of frosting recipes and several chocolate frosting recipes to choose from.  I decided on the Chocolate Cream Frosting because I liked the idea of chocolate frosting with chocolate cookies.  Chocolate on chocolate…yum!

I have to admit, the Chocolate Cream Frosting recipe was a little confusing for me.  It calls for a 16 oz package of chocolate bits, or 1 cup.  16 oz is actually 2 cups of chocolate bits.  I used the full 16 oz, but didn’t double the rest of the recipe because I just wasn’t sure based on the recipe.

I melted the chocolate bits and the butter together.  The recipe doesn’t say to do this, but it seemed to make sense to melt the two together.  The recipe calls for 1/4 cup milk, I decided to use the left over evaporated milk from the Chocolate Drop Cookies recipe instead of the fat free milk I had in the refrigerator.  Not sure what difference that made, but I thought it would make the frosting creamier.

After all that, the frosting turned out pretty thick.  I continued to add evaporated milk to try to loosen it up.  In the end, I added about ½ cup more milk.  It helped some, but the frosting was still a bit thicker than I expected.

Next, I got ready to frost the cookies.

The frosting was thick, but it was also smooth!  It ended up being the perfect consistency and looked great!

Next, I added the nuts.  The recipe doesn’t specify the type of nuts, so I decided to use both walnuts and pecans.

The finished cookies looked great! A fancy looking chocolate cookie that has it all! Chocolate cookie, chocolate frosting, and nuts on top!

As I mentioned, my friends loved these Chocolate Drop Cookies with Chocolate Cream Frosting! I had to make a few adjustments to the recipes, but the end result cookies were a huge hit with my friends and family!

If you love chocolate, you’ll love these cookies! An easy drop cookie with yummy frosting…who can resist?

XXOO,

Janet
